BEDFORD – On Senior Night, celebrating the four-year careers of those who persevered to the end, Bedford North Lawrence won a marathon match that lasted almost that long.

Angelica Godsey pulled out a 3-set battle with Morgan Payne at No.3 singles as the Stars ended the regular season with a 3-2 victory over Martinsville on Tuesday afternoon – and evening.

Godsey, in a gutsy effort that took five minutes shy of 3 1/2 hours to complete, outlasted Payne for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 triumph that sent her four upperclassmen teammates out as winners.

“I’m really proud of her,” said BNL coach Joni Stigall, who pulled Godsey out of her usual No.2 doubles slot and inserted her in singles. “She had never gone that long. She could have quit.”

The Stars (6-9) swept the doubles to score key points. Abby Riley and Abbey Bridges bounced Sydney Smith and Katie Fulkerson by identical 7-5, 7-5 sets at No.1, while Sarah Gaither – switched back to doubles after spending the bulk of the year in singles – combined with Molly Simmerman for a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Erica Hedrick and Olivia Ostler at No.2.

BNL’s Abby Riley focuses on a forehand return during her match at No.1 doubles.

Gaither was thrilled for the second chance in doubles.

“I’m definitely glad to be back,” she said. “Singles is just a different mindset. I’ve learned a lot about transition and dealing with change. So it feels good, obviously. Playing for four years, this was a good way to end the home season.”

The Artesians claimed the two two singles spots as sisters Maggie and Ali Viewegh posted straight-set wins. Maggie rolled over Alex Godsey 6-0, 6-0 at No.1, while Ali clipped Presley Clark 6-3, 6-3 at No.2

BNL expects to see Martinsville again this week. The Artesians will face Edgewood in the opening round of the IHSAA sectional at Bloomington North on Wednesday, and that winner will meet BNL in the semifinal on Thursday.
