INDIANAPOLIS – Bedford North Lawrence’s Andrew Swenson won his final race of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon.
Swenson touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke state consolation race at IUPUI, clocking 50.59 to finish 9th in the state during the IHSAA state championships.
After setting a school record of 49.59 in the sectional, Swenson was seeded 13th after the prelims on Friday, but he came back to shave off .19 seconds from that event.
“I’m satisfied with it,” Swenson said. “I would have liked a faster time but ninth in the state is not too shabby at all. I was disappointed with my time (from Friday night), but at the same time I can’t be mad at anything. I just had fun and that’s all that really matters.”
Carmel’s Wyatt Davis, the two-time defending state champion in the backstroke, shattered the state record while winning his third consecutive title. Davis finished in 46.66 seconds, breaking the mark of 47.06 set by Chesterton’s Aaron Whitaker in 2014.
